Passing of Advisory Board Member, Domenick Miretti

Advisory Board Member and dear friend to METRANS, Domenick Louis Miretti, passed away on Wednesday, February 17, 2016, after a brief and brave battle with cancer. He was 83 years old at the time of his passing.  Domenick was born September 12, 1932 in Rancho Palos Verdes, and he later lived in Chino, El Segundo, and in Harbor City where he settled with his family.

Domenick was a founding member of the METRANS Advisory Board and one of METRANS strongest supporters.  He was a stalwart proponent of “bringing the university to the docks, and the docks to the university.”  He was convinced that longshore workers could learn from university research, and that more informed and relevant research would result from communications with longshore workers and others involved in the international trade supply chain.

Domenick was a key architect of the METRANS project, the CITT State of the Trade and Transportation Industry Town Hall.  The Town Hall was originally conceived as a forum for discussing port and trade issues with the ILWU and it took tireless efforts by Domenick to persuade union members to show up.  There had never been a program offered by a university aimed at longshore labor.  Through his efforts, the Town Hall became an institution.  After more than a decade, the Town Hall has become a forum not only for longshore labor but for all stakeholders in international trade.

It is not possible to do justice to the many contributions Domenick Miretti has made to METRANS.  He will be fondly remembered and greatly missed.

Services will be held at noon on Thursday, February 25, at Green Hills Cemetery, 27501 South Western Avenue, Rancho Palos Verdes. A viewing will precede the service at 11:30 am.
