The 2028 Los Angeles Olympics will require innovative transportation strategies to move hundreds of thousands of travelers reliably to and from events. The challenge is that these mega-events produce travel behaviors that differ from routine patterns and which exceed the scope of existing planning models. Large-scale and continuously updated human mobility data from smartphones now enable direct observation of how millions of people adjust their travel in and around major events in high spatial and temporal resolution. This project will leverage large-scale mobile data to build a foundation for modeling mega-event travel and inform innovations in transportation planning models well beyond the Olympics, pioneering adaptations of mobile data that could model travel patterns from novel events such as evacuations or changes to infrastructure to accommodate safety, health, economic, or seasonal needs.

Speaker Bio:
Abigail Horn, PhD is a Research Computer Scientist at the Information Sciences Institute and incoming Research Assistant Professor in the Daniel J. Epstein Dept. of Industrial and Systems Engineering in the School of Engineering at the University of Southern California. She was recently a Research Associate in the Dept. of Population and Public Health Sciences, also at USC. The general area of her research is the combination of approaches from network and computational social science and systems modeling with large-scale novel data sources to design solutions to pressing public health challenges. Dr. Horn focuses on problems in food systems and nutrition, and infectious disease modeling.
