What are the needs and experiences of women traversing LA County? Historically, LA County Metro (Metro) has followed a "gender-neutral" approach to service planning, without considering the unique needs and preferences of women, who comprise over 50% of their ridership. In 2018, Metro launched a first-of-its-kind study to answer these questions, with the aim to improve women's safety and comfort on transit and to attract and retain women riders to the Metro system. Through focus groups, surveys, workshops, and ethnographic study methods, more than 1,900 women shared their experiences of traveling throughout the LA region. This panel, comprised of team members from the Metro study, will explore the existing academic research landscape on women’s travel behavior, along with the study methods developed for the Metro report and the key findings that will help to shape Metro’s future planning efforts.
